The Casa Frela Gallery, located at 47 W. 119th St. in Manhattan will present "A Century of Beauty: Celebrating 100 Years of African American Beauty." You will enjoy viewing a fine collection of historical African-American artifacts and memorabilia. Opening with a public reception on Saturday, December 2, 2006, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., this special exhibition will be on view until January 31, 2007.

This exhibition offers an examination and rare look into African American hair care since 1900. The exhibit celebrates major figures in the industry and explains the evolution of beauty salons and barbershops and also examines ethnic beauty product development.

The Morrow family's "Four Hundred Years Without a Comb" collection is at the heart of the show. This collection was developed over a 40-year period by Dr. Willie Morrow, author of the 1973 book and film "400 Years Without a Comb." Morrow has written more than 20 books on the subject of African American beauty. He is the president of California Curl in San Diego, California, where the museum collection is permanently housed. He is also a key contributor to the hair care industry. Morrow's most notable creation was the famed "curl" product during the 1980s. Dr. Morrow's daughter, Cheryl Morrow, supplements the collection with the addition of rare product advertising and packaging. Featuring the fine original artwork by Albert Fennel and Charles D. Rucker, along with unique business documentation, she shows Black women "firsts" on magazine covers and in corporate advertising.

"Hair and history are intertwined for African Americans like they are no other people," said Cheryl Morrow, also the exhibition's curator and owner of the collection. "This exhibit is a celebratory experience with a chronological perspective that takes the viewer on a journey through time."

The Morrow collection brings to life the social, cultural and spiritual aspect of African American beauty. It showcases a newsworthy collection of plantation beauty practices, barbering tools, Black hair treatments and one-of-a-kind artifacts. There are images that define the iconic, ageless beauty of folks in entertainment, sports, politics, fashion and everyday life. African American style and artistry continues to make an enormous contribution to American culture and to the world.

The December 2 reception is free and open to the public. However, you must RSVP by calling (212) 722-8777 or e-mailing penpower@eniinternet.com.
